Using stone walls for your garden

Stone masonry is a great way to create a fence between your property and your neighbors’. It is one of the oldest forms of construction and adds a rustic feel to your property. There are many advantages and some disadvantages to using stone to create a fence. This article will explain some of these pros and cons of stone walls.

Advantages

It looks great

Stone masonry is one of the most eco-friendly ways to build a wall.  It fits right into the landscape and looks like a natural part of the environment. There is a lot of artistry involved in making a stone wall. Stone is usually not sanded or molded to fit a wall, so the builders have to find the right stone for each part of the wall and make sure that they fit well together. They can also create intricate patterns by using different types of stones for differing colors and textures.

It is low maintenance

Saying that stone walls are low maintenance may be an understatement. There is almost no maintenance required to have stone walls stay up for decades. You may occasionally need to replace stones in the wall if the fall out but this is extremely rare. They are also very durable and will last for a long time because they are very resistant to the elements and also to stresses put on it by your family and your pets.

Disadvantages

They take time to build

One of the reasons that more people do not build stone walls is that it takes a lot of tie to build one. The right stones have to be found and then hauled to the site. Hauling them takes a lot of energy and time if it is a small operation or you are building the wall yourself. However, it might be a great family project and spending time building the wall together can be very rewarding.

They require specialized builders

Stone masonry is a kind of art form and builders need to understand how to approach the project and how to go about it. There are certified professionals who specialize in stone masonry. This can also get expensive as while your building materials are free, the cost of labor may be quite expensive. However, it is good to have an experienced builder to make sure the project goes off without a hitch.

Stone walls are a very environmentally friendly fencing option and you should consider building one if you have the time and patience.

How to deal with moisture problems in your basement walls.

If you have problems with moisture build-up in your basement, they could bring with them other problems. There may be a constant musty smell in the basement but this is just the least of your problems. Moisture also makes it easier for mold and mildew to grow which can be a real threat to the health of you and your family. These are just some of the fixes for consistent moisture problems in the basement.

Use latex water proofer

Latex water proofing mixes can be found in your local hardware store and should be used to fix small cracks in your wall that is allowing water to make it into the basement. First, clean the crack out with a stiff brush and then dampen the wall. Next, apply the water proofing mix to the crack. Start at the bottom and work your way to the top of the crack and make sure that the whole crack is filled in and sealed. You need to then soak the wall with some water and allow the mix to set in for at least 12 hours. Applying another coat after the first coat has set is highly recommended. These cracks in the wall can often lead to more cracks and may also get bigger themselves requiring more extensive repair. So, get to them before they become a bigger problem.

Use mortar

If you find larger holes in the basement walls, you may need to use some fresh mortar and use it to fill it in. You should start by chiseling a dovetail groove into the area that is cracked and stained from excess moisture. After removing all the debris, use a trowel to fill it in with mortar.

Use concrete sealer

Concrete sealer can be used to waterproof the walls of your house. You can apply a coat or two of sealer to all your walls. The sealer can also be applied to damp walls which makes it easier. Additionally, the sealer can be decorated to match the aesthetics of the rest of the basement.

Use a polyethylene membrane

A polyethylene membrane will prevent water from moving through the walls. You need to measure the area of the all you want to cover before you go out and buy the membrane. However, it does nothing to water which is already in the walls, so you may need to remove this water using a sump pump before you start.

These are some protective measures to keep water out of your walls. If you still have problems with moisture, consult a professional for more thorough solutions.

Flooring options for your kitchen- porcelain tile and cork

Flooring for your kitchen does not have to be restricted to hardwood and vinyl as discussed in the last article. You have many other options. This article will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using tiling and cork in your kitchen.

Porcelain tiles

Porcelain tiles are one of the toughest flooring options available in the market. They give you the look of stone in your kitchen and are a sort of premium version of ceramic tiles. They are more durable than ceramic tiling and are, in fact, one of the most durable and stain resistant flooring options you can find. If you have a kitchen where you get constant spilling and messes, porcelain tile will keep its look despite them. It is also great for outdoor kitchens as it is very resistant to the elements.

You can use it in barbecue areas in the yard. Porcelain tile is available in glazed and unglazed forms, so unglazed tiling with their natural earth tones will be perfect for the yard. Glazed tiling is available in a wide range of colors so you should be able to find one that matches the color scheme of your kitchen. You can even have it look like real stone without having to pay the prices of real stone. They are also very slip resistant and are good for homes for the elderly. Make sure that the brand you choose is certified as such before you purchase.

Cork

Cork is another slip resistant flooring material for the kitchen that can be used in homes for the elderly. They are also softer than tile and wood, which makes them perfect for people with weak joints. It is a very environmentally friendly option as it is made from tree bark that grows back and is harvested only once every ten years. This makes it a sustainable material. Cork is also waterproof and can be compressed due to the ways the cells are structured inside it.

They usually come in tiles or planks depending on the look you want. They have a grain pattern that consists of speckles and swirls and the natural texture makes them a pleasure to walk on as well. However, they are not very durable and the floor will need to be resealed every four years to prevent scratches and moisture from building up in the spaces between the tiles. This sealing is usually done using natural wax. Water based polyurethane is also used sometimes.
